Insurance Coordinator

by Jay Wertzler —

Your Insurance Coordinator is an Insurance Subject Matter Expert who you select to coordinate and serve as spokesperson for the entire insurance team. They agree to provide leadership to your insurance team of Subject Matter Experts, and to serve as backup to each if they are unable to attend any meetings where their recommendations are being presented.

Recruiting for Insurance Subject Matter Experts is a bit different from recruiting the other SMEs. You will not find an individual who is an expert in all narrow fields of insurance. Therefore we recommend you do not interview seeking an Insurance Coordinator (also known as Insurance Team Leader). Rather, simply begin interviewing candidates who are experts in narrow fields of insurance and invite the best candidates onto your team as insurance sub-specialists.

Once you've acquired all of the Insurance SME sub-specialists, then observe them. Select the one with the broadest skill and the one who demonstrates the best leadership skills and invite them to become your Insurance Team Leader.

Best-in-Class Criteria

  • An insurance professional with more than ten years of experience, and who has expertise in two or more narrow insurance niches (property & casualty, life, health, disability, or long term care)
  • An individual with exceptional skills in dealing with clients in a professional and consultative manner.  A professional with a process and client perspective which is free from conflicts and offers your clients the most dispassionate advice regarding the exact right kinds and amounts of insurance required
  • A person who can perform "peer review" over recommendations proposed by the other individuals on the insurance team
  • Ordinarily, but not always, the Insurance Coordinator is elevated to that position from among the various insurance Subject Matter Experts, rather than being acquired as a separate Deliverables Team Member

Common credentials or certifications

While experience and demonstrated skill are more important than credentials, if absent, you should simply seek to understand why credentials or certifications were never sought. In the end, you are seeking someone to offer Best-in-Class recommendations, and their credentials, while giving a clue to their abilities, will not be your deciding factor in selecting the best candidate.
